Sinus Augmentation
Sinus augmentation, also known as a sinus lift, is a surgical procedure aimed at increasing the amount of bone in the upper jaw, specifically in the area of the molars and premolars. This procedure is often performed to prepare the jaw for dental implants when there is insufficient bone height due to sinus proximity or bone loss.

Procedure Steps
1. Initial Assessment:
Comprehensive dental examination, including imaging (usually a CBCT scan) to evaluate the sinus cavity and bone structure.
2. Anesthesia:
- Local anesthesia is administered to numb the surgical area.
- Sedation may be provided based on patient needs.
3. Incision and Flap Creation
- A small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the underlying bone.
- A flap of tissue is gently lifted to access the sinus ceiling.
4. Creating an Osteotomy
A small hole (osteotomy) is drilled into the bone at the sinus floor
5. Lifting the Sinus Membrane
- The sinus membrane (Schneiderian membrane) is carefully lifted upward to create space.
- Special instruments or hydraulic pressure may be used to gently elevate the membrane.
6. Adding Bone Graft Material
- Bone graft material (synthetic, allograft, or autograft) is placed into the created space.
- This encourages new bone growth over time.
7. Membrane Closure and Flap Suturing
- The gum tissue flap is repositioned and sutured securely.
- Sometimes a collagen membrane is used to cover the graft site.
8. Healing Period
- The patient waits typically 4-9 months for the bone to integrate and mature.
- During this period, new bone forms, providing a solid foundation for implants.
9. Placement of Dental Implants
Once adequate bone has developed, a second procedure to place the dental implants is performed.
Post-Operative Care
- Avoid blowing the nose or sneezing forcefully.
- Follow prescribed pain management and antibiotics.
- Maintain good oral hygiene.
- Attend follow-up appointments to monitor healing.
